LandmarksThis series addresses the hotly debated issue of urban development encroaching on agricultural land and the natural environment of the Sunshine Coast in South East Queensland—an issue no less controversial here in the Trust-protected Southern Gulf Islands of British Columbia, Canada.
The large diptychs and small painted inkjet prints in this series depict montages of tea trees in the Wallum of Noosa National Park, urban roads and skate park graffiti—inviting the viewer to consider the impact of rampant urban development on the environment. At the same time, the aesthetic melding of these disparate images suggests the potential for sustainable growth that can both accommodate inevitable change and preserve the essence of place. The titles of these works are phrases extracted from the poem The Wanderer, by Australian poet Christopher Brennan. |
